Image File Formats

Bitmap
jpg: JPG stands for joint photographic experts group, JPGs can be used to edit or make photographs, illustrations, web and digital graphics. JPG is a file that is a raster image file format that uses the lossy compression method. JPG can be best used for Website, PowerPoint and Keynote presentation. Ideal for when small files are required.

png: PNG stands for portable network graphic, support transparent backgrounds, making them preferred for graphic design. PNGs can be used for Web applications, PowerPoint and Keynote presentations, and digital printed materials. Ideal for when you need an image with a transparent background.

gif: GIF stand for graphics interchange format and is a format for image files that supports both animated and static images. You use GIF for Web applications, PowerPoint and Keynote presentations. Ideal for simple animations. GIFs is mostly seen being used for meme now a days.

bmp: BMP stands for bitmap and Microsoft originally developed the BMP format for its Windows operating system to maintain the resolution of digital images across different screens and devices. BMP is a simple raster graphics image file format designed to store bitmap digital images independently of a display device.

psd: PSD stands for photoshop document and is native in adobe photoshop. PSD files may include image layers, adjustment layers, layer masks, annotations, file information, keywords, and other Photoshop-specific elements. They are commonly created and shared among graphics professionals.

tiff: TIFF stands for tag image file format and is a computer file used to store raster graphics and image information. A favorite among photographers, TIFFs are a handy way to store high-quality images before editing if you want to avoid lossy file formats. TIFF can be used for Photographs, illustrations and Print. Ideal for when high resolution is required.

heic: HEIC stands for HEIC is also known as High-Efficiency File Format, a file format used to store photos in smaller sizes but with higher quality than the popular JPEG photo formats. Because Apple regularly uses HEIC files, you can easily open them on  Mac computers with Preview or Photoshop.

psb: PSB stands for Photoshop Big or Photoshop Large Document Format, is a proprietary image file format used by Adobe Photoshop. PSB files have the extension. psb, and can store a maximum image size of 300,000 pixels in each dimension.

camera raw: The term RAW doesn't actually stand for anything, but rather refers to the raw data that is preserved when using this file type. RAW files can essentially be thought of as digital photo negatives.

Vector
ai: AI, which stands for Adobe Illustrator, is the proprietary Adobe file type for vector images. Other common vector image file types include PDF, EPS, and SVG. 

pdf: PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It's a versatile file format created by Adobe that gives people an easy, reliable way to present and exchange documents

svg: SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics and  is a web-friendly vector file format. As opposed to pixel-based raster files like JPEGs, vector files store images via mathematical formulas based on points and lines on a grid.

indd: INDD stands for InDesign Document. Whenever you're working in InDesign, you're working with an INDD file. Routinely used by graphic designers, journalists, marketers, and publishers who work with Adobe products, the INDD format is the default file type for InDesign. INDD is mainly used to create pages.

eps: EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript and can be used to edit and create Logos, diagrams, illustrations, figures, charts. People print materials produced using professional print design programs like Adobe InDesign or Illustrator.

ait: ait stands for Adobe Illustrator template, a AIT file extension is an Illustrator template file that's used to create multiple Adobe Illustrator (.AI) files. AIT files hold the different components of an Illustrator drawing, including the images, settings, and layout, and are useful when working with projects that should have a similar, pre-formatted design, like brochures, business cards, etc.


Layout

imdd: imdd stands for Internet Movie Database is an online database containing information and statistics about movies, TV shows and video games as well as actors, directors and other film industry professionals.

idml: idml stands for InDesign Markup Language documents. InDesign Markup Language is the interchange format for InDesign  documents. The idml file extension, associated with IDML files, designates the proprietary document file format created by Adobe Systems.
